SARTRE'S 12 CIGARETTES AND THE OMER

2005

Sartre's 12 cigarettes and the Omer is a series of 50 drawings. Each drawing is an exercise in counting. In terms of duration, counting belongs to the faithful. In terms of verification, counting belongs to the cynical. Because the exercise leaves a visual biproduct, the act of counting situates itself as accomplished and archived, in a position to be analysed rather than a position of active analysis.
